disorganised notes on watching Brotherhood
No longer on a wrong journal!
- water 35l, carbon 20kg, ammonia 4l, lime 1.5kg, phosphorus 800g, salt 250g, nitre 100g, sulphur 80g, fluorine 7.5g, iron 5g, silicon 3g, trace amounts of 15 other minerals...
- ECW 26%, ICW 34%, lipids 19%, proteins...
- OVERALL: keyword is harsher edges, since he has less to waver over. In particular, probably even more badass. Oh dear.
- more matter-of-fact, particularly about backstory, but there are things he'll still dance round - he just doesn't make as big a deal of them? and blabbing still does have to have some reason, though relatively little...
- even less polite. Both throw "old man" (and I guess similar pejoratives) around freely, but here he hardly breaks out the keigo even on the rare occasions he respects / is trying to get something out of someone. *Check the dub for how this is handled? If it's handled at all.
- open expression of hope - smiles to keep a brave face up but it isn't subdued
- doesn't appear to doubt himself so much till after the fact, though he'll acknowledge fuckups pretty readily then. Can also retain emotional distance when thinking about them, unless it's super close to home - and then his responses are more along the lines of "I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry" than 2003's tendency to shut down in a pit of angst and flare up only once provoked more?...
- extend into even more impulsive?...
- after failed human transmutation: "dispirited" eyes → "burning". Then shares plans similarly matter-of-factly. Contrast with 2003 where there's more lying on display (pretends to be asleep), taking burdens onto self and no-one else...
- in fact yeah less avoidant in general? not that this says much.
- but despite matter-of-factness (things like "I think Al has something on his mind" are things he doesn't have nearly as much of a hang-up about sharing), in a sense is less open.
- arrogant little shit whatever canon he's from but I think maybe '03 has more actual pride. ...maybe to go along with the slightly less anti-authoritarianism.
- self-sacrifice still an option where there appears to be no other way out, but he recognises it's a dumb option.
- in similar but less extreme vein, less transactional view of people...?
- less indication that jerkass-ness (and in particular Napoleon complex) is a facade? Doesn't necessarily mean that it entirely isn't, but would mean he's better at it. Less volatile.
- point stolen from elsewhere - brute force over showboating?
- shipping. Yeah, yeah. Aside from the fact that it's canon here, his proactive (if friggin' dorky) flirting could be taken as an extension of his lack of self-doubt...
- "Mom praised us when we did alchemy. That's why we got into it."
- "I'm grateful. Brother might not say it, but he is too."
- "[calmly] Ah, don't make that face. I don't wanna think about it either."
- "I'm not a genius. I just saw it."
- "[to Winry] I don't know. What do you want me to do?"
- sleeping habits?: on back, stomach out, hair down (usually), jolting awake from bad dreams, snoring
comparing specific lines / scenes in the retread part of the series just because:
- "[GRIN] Nah, God seems to hate me, so he'd probably send me back." / "[sweatdrop] Aah, that was close..."
- revealing radio monologue in Liore: smug the whole time, makes the reveal by bursting out laughing / appears to be serious to string him along, makes the reveal by rolling his eyes and waiting for him to catch on
- "We're not devils or gods. We're just humans. Tiny, insignificant humans who couldn't save a little girl.": rage against the heavens in the rain / whispered sometime later, after getting shaken up by near death
- "I know we're idiots!"
- "There's no legitimacy in revenge that drags in people who have nothing to do with it!": after the fact, seems sincere / before the fact, Al disagrees, then it's shown to be (kind of) hypocrisy
- "We don't look all that cool, huh? Look, we're falling apart."
- returning home: "[RANT AD INFINITUM]" / "Who's this? Doesn't he get the joke?" "[sheepishly] ...ahahaha."
- "I can't just sit here while we have a lead!" / "I hate sitting around here doing nothing!"
- "God must really hate those who commit taboo... Is it gonna be like this for the rest of our lives?"
- reaction to decoding just before Lab 5: it's this, it's nasty, don't tell anyone. / "[SUDDEN CUP SMASH] ...Sorry. I don't even want to look at it any more. [promptly clams up, has to be talked back into action]"
- "He's been acting weird. I think he has something on his mind." / "..." "Something happened between you two, didn't it?" "...Mm."
- "There are some things in life you can only convey with words.": said in a scene where he's absent, and it's Winry who brings out the words / said directly to him, he admits he's scared of it but brings them out eventually
